Metropolitan has distributed hundreds of successful films in France, and has developed a keen understanding of distribution and marketing. It was an easy step for Hadida to move into film production.

His first production was True Romance, the first film produced from a Quentin Tarantino script and his first collaboration with director Tony Scott. Hadida now produces or co-produces several films each year through Davis Films, the production company owned and operated by himself and Victor. These productions encompass the best of the French industry, European productions and co-productions, and American productions.

Hadida recently produced The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Terry Gilliam’s last visionary creation, starring Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer, Lily Cole, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrel and Jude Law ; Solomon Kane, the first epic adventure adapted from the classic pulp stories by Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan The Barbarian, directed by Michael J. Bassett and starring James Purefoy ; Christophe Gans’ Silent Hill and Tony Scott’s Domino with Kiera Knightley and Mickey Rourke. Hadida is also producer of The Bridge of San Luis Rey with Robert De Niro, and Fabian Bielinsky’s thriller El Aura. He was co-executive producer on George Clooney’s Academy Award nominated Good Night and Good Luck.

Hadida has had a long association with writer-director Roger Avary, and such films as Killing Zoe or Rules of Attractions are a result of their collaboration. He’s used to having long term relationship with the talents he works with, like Christophe Gans. Hadida produced Gans’ first film, and continued with the phenomenally successful Le Pacte des Loups, and Silent Hill.

Other Hadida productions include David Cronenberg’s acclaimed psychological thriller Spider starring Ralph Fiennes and Miranda Richardson, Sheldon Lettich’s Only the Strong (the first Capoeira/martial arts film, and the film which introduced both Mark Dacascos and the famous score music now popularized in the United States in the “zoom zoom zoom” Mazda car commercials), Michael Radford’s Dancing at the Blue Iguana, Steve Barron’s Pinocchio with Martin Landau (one of the first films to combine computer-generated images and live action), Matthew Bright’s Freeway (winner of the top award at the Cognac Festival and Reese Witherspoon’s first role), and Gabriele Salvatores’ Nirvana.

Samuel Hadida will next bring to the big screen the sequel in 3D to the first adaptation of the survival-horror video game Silent Hill, set to be directed by Michael J. Bassett, as well as the next Tony Scott’s film, based on the novel Potsdamer Platz.

Bao Bao Wan Bao Bao Wan
Jue Rui Bao Si Jiao Yu Zi Xun You Xian Gong Shi

Bao Bao Wan was born in Beijing, China. Granddaughter of the legendary Wan Li, former Chairman of the National People’s Congress, Bao Bao spent the early years of her life within the confines of the city’s Presidential compound. At the tender age of 15, Wan’s thirst for adventure took her abroad to finish her schooling. After graduating from the Master’s School in Westchester, N.Y., Wan was accepted at the prestigious liberal arts college Sarah Lawrence outside of Manhattan.

At University Bao Bao flourished in her studies, particularly in photography, earning her an apprenticeship with the world-renowned Joel Sternfeld. Her final year of study culminated in Paris, where she delved into the existentialist texts of Jean Paul Sartre, and absorbed the rich visual history of the city. Though she had arrived in Paris a scholar, Bao Bao quickly became a fixture on the social scene, celebrated by the European set as China’s first socialite. The first Chinese debutante ever to be invited to attend the famed Bal des Débutantes at the Hôtel Crillon, Wan graciously accepted her status as the embodiment of the modern Chinese woman.

In 2006, Bao Bao obtained a GIA Graduate Gemologist degree at the Gemological Institute of America in Hong Kong, channeling her love of fashion and art into creating opulent fine jewelry. One year later, on November 27, Bao Bao Wan Fine Jewelry was formally launched. Her homeland and her culture were major inspirations for the collection: “Every piece of my jewelry represents myself and a generation of Chinese women who are fragile yet very bold and crazy,” Bao bao declared to Time Magazine, exemplifying the duality apparent in her person and her work. The jewelry, described by its creator as ‘feminine, impossible and loud’ soon graced the covers of international titles such as W and Vogue.

Effortlessly balancing her life as an artist and a socialite in Beijing, Hong Kong and abroad, Bao Bao has become known for more than her family’s rich history. Securing her status as a sought after fine jewelry designer, 2009 saw Forever Mark inviting Wan to collaborate on a special project. Along with Allen Chan, Limi Yamamoto and Theo Fennel, Bao bao Wan produced Precious Collection, which was shown internationally in Hong Kong, Beijing and Tokyo. Also in 2009, Bao bao designed the ‘Dragon d’Eau’ consisting of a necklace, bracelet and earrings for DIVENUS series. They premiered at the Shining Moments Jewelry Show, a joint venture organized by Chow Tai Fook and Centre Cultural de Chine a Paris.

Most recently, alongside the likes of Zaha Hadid, Stephen Webster and Patrick Mauboussin, Bao bao’s talent was sought after for EnlightenedTM, Swarovski’s new brand featuring precision cut genuine and created gemstones. The artist’s whimsical cuff resulting from this prestigious invitation is showcased in the exclusive trend and design book, Gemvisions 2010, the publication widely regarded in the industry as the ultimate fine jewelry resource.

Her inspirations, like her experiences, are diverse. Finding beauty in “the lit windows of an old building at night in New York, the allies in Beijing, the sadness in the air in Paris”, Bao Bao continues to create exquisite, one-of-kind works of wearable art for a select clientele, including a recent gift of cufflinks for Karl Lagerfeld.

As an artist and an individual, Bao Bao is intrigued by paradox, contradiction and duality, as suggested by her personal motto, ‘beauty always walks on the edge of the opposite’. Her aesthetic is one that acknowledges and finds beauty her tradition, while still being ultimately outspoken and modern in sensibility. When asked, Bao bao prefers to contextualize herself within the genre of her work. She identifies with the stone Alexandrite: “it is the color of a ruby until light shines upon it, when it turns green…I am Alexandrite, ruby by day, emerald by night. I switch from independent to dependant, fragile to invincible, man to woman…often many times a day.” Like her jewelry, Bao bao Wan exists within the fragile tension of a contradiction.

Wayne Wang Wayne Wang
Director / Producer
Wayne Wang Productions

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Wayne Wang moved to Los Altos, California in 1967. For two years he lived on a radical Quaker ranch, doing chores in exchange for rent, and attended college nearby. Then he decided to study film production at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, an education he augmented by avidly watching the films of the French New Wave, German New Cinema, Kenji Mizoguchi, Yasujiro Ozu, and Satyajit Ray.

He later returned to Hong Kong and got a job directing a popular TV series, “Below the Lion Rock”, for RTHK-TV (the Hong Kong equivalent of PBS) but he found that he did not fit into the traditionalist system and returned to the U.S. where he got involved with the Asian American community in the Bay Area.

In 1982, with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the American Film Institute, Wang made CHAN IS MISSING, in which two cabbies search through San Francisco’s Chinatown for the mysterious Chan, a man who’s made off with their hand-earned dough. “Although the character of Chan is never seen through the film,” says Wang, “I must have identified with him. He’s a resident of Chinatown but he’s missing. He belongs there but he’s an outsider at the same time.” Wang also wanted to show another Chinatown – the one behind the scenes with its temperamental chefs and internal politics that have more to do with the divide between Taiwan and China than triads. “Unlike Hollywood filmmakers, I didn’t use Chinatown as a signifier of mysterious Oriental doom,” he says. “I took my characters and audience into its very real streets.” This and the next film he made, DIM SUM: A LITTLE BIT OF HEART (1985), a family comedy about a Chinese American mother and daughter relationship, established his reputation.

Wang is often identified with films about the Chinese and the Chinese Diaspora, including the film adaptation of THE JOY LUCK CLUB (1993). However, he has also made such quirky independent features as SMOKE (1995) and BLUE IN THE FACE (1995), both starring Harvey Keitel and set in Brooklyn, and even a Hollywood-style romantic comedy MAID IN MANHATTAN (2002) starring Jennifer Lopez. At the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival, Wang premiered two feature films, A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS and THE PRINCESS OF NEBRASKA, as well as appeared in Arthur Dong’s documentary film HOLLYWOOD CHINESE.

Wang won the Golden Shell for Best Film at the 2007 San Sebastian Film Festival for A THOUSAND YEARS OF GOOD PRAYERS.

He is married to former actress Cora Miao, who appeared in three of his films, DIM SUM, EAT A BOWL OF TEA AND LIFE IS CHEAP… BUT TOILET PAPER IS EXPENSIVE. They live in San Francisco and New York City.
